Dreams Do Come True

I think I may have posted somewhere that with any luck, this spring we would be able to build a post frame building to house a 3 car garage plus my studio. Well, today my dreams came a lot closer to coming true. We got the settlement for my husband's disability claim. He has 35+ year history of debilitating headaches and we have been trying to get him on disability since his job of 31 years moved south to Mexico and left him unemployed. We went through the apply (denied), appeal (denied), requested a hearing (wait 28 months), then the judge approved him. Now with the meager sum that he will be getting each month, at least I wouldn't be the sole bread-winner any more. This comes at a very good time since I work in the automotive industry and I think everyone knows what is going on there.

As for the picture, this will be the view from the window in the office/reception area of my studio. I plan on "stealing" about 15 feet on the east end of the building for a studio, changing room, and office/reception area. The studio area will be approximately 20' deep x 12' wide with 12' high ceilings. Once we start construction, it will be easy to find a picture to post and you will see the day to day progress. Oh, when I said we would be building it, I really meant it, my husband and I do virtually 100% of the actual construction on anything we build, but I'm done floating concrete. I'm getting way too old to do a 48 x 32 foot slab of concrete.

The picture is 3 shots stitched together. They were shot hand-held at ISO 100, f22, and 1/8 second. I used a program that came with my Canon P&S called Photo Stitch to join them. Click this link for a larger view if you like.

  1. Excellent shot.. this is one of the things I want to try soon. I feel for your hubby, I also suffer from horrible headaches/migraines that can sometimes last for days or weeks. I am glad he finally got what he was asking for. Good for you on the studio!

  3. Candy, sorry to hear about your migraines, I've seen co-workers when they hit them.

Dan's headaches used to be called "Cluster" headaches because they could last for months at a stretch and then they changed the name to "Icepick" headaches because they felt like someone stuck an icepick in your head. The pain now after 7 surgeries on his head has dulled but is always there and he will be on pain killing narcotics for the rest of his life and for the most part can function reasonably well. Thanks so much for your well wishes.

  5. I am not sure where to start... I am glad to hear your husbands’ disability has gone through. I know how headaches can be debilitating. Advil Migraine is never far from reach for me. On the other side WWHHOOOHHHOOOO!!! You are one lucky girl opening your own studio on premises. Looks like you'll have plenty of land to create location shots right there. I always need to travel. I live on a postage sized lot. And to have the support of your husband is priceless. My husband supports me but doesn't want another business in the house after 17 years of daycare. I get it :o) BTW You stitched the 3 pictures beautifully. I can't wait to see the construction shots! I am super excited for you. Congrats!

  7. The disability merry-go-round can be a nightmare. I'm so glad you have made it through and he was approved.

Looks like a great spot for your studio. Add some landscaping and you will have beautiful backdrops for outdoor shots too.

  9. Thanks all, I'll have to do this shot again when everything greens up. Here is a link to a shot I did at the gazebo on the right side of the panorama. I just need to get vines growing up each corner so it doesn't look so bare.

There is also an area at the far end of the shot area that we want to dig a small pond to be used as a venue. I'll keep you posted on our progress.

  11. Sorry about the migraines. I and my 11 year old son get them. It's rough! I am also glad things are working out for your husband! What a blessing! I love the photo. I've been wanting to try to do the panoramic thing, but haven't got to it on my long list of things to do! Congrats on the studio!

  12. I get migraines sometimes, so sympathise there. What a fabulous view - take it again for spring summer and autumn! I want to try that stitchin' thing too, but my view is not so attractive! Could we all do a panorama of our homes?

  13. Definitely a great view and you won't have to leave your studio to take a POTD unless you want too!
